I've been constructing and creating projects on my sewing machine since I was five years old. I sewed most of my wardrobe from middle school right through college, often altering commercial patterns and adding detail with vintage fabrics and linens. I've always been on the lookout for unique textiles to repurpose; in fact, when I was growing up, there wasn't a cotton bedspread in the house that was safe from my scissors! My continued fascination with fabric and fiber led to a more formal study of weaving, fabric design and fine arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where I earned a B.F.A. in Designer Crafts. I am currently taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I began quilting in earnest in 1993, and have since created several hundred quilts, mostly custom designs commissioned by my many wonderful clients. Much of my custom work incorporates clients' photos, clothing and fabrics, so that each piece evokes strong memories and tells a story. Around the same time, I began teaching hand and machine sewing and quilting to children in after school and camp programs, workshops, and private classes. I also began teaching adults. More recently I've begun to focus on teaching disabled children as well as working with Alzheimer's and stroke patients attending adult day care. My love for teaching, and my long history of learning by trial and error led me to write my first book, Easy Singer Style: Pattern-Free Fashion Accessories, released in April 2007. My second book, Quilt Blocks and Quilts from Your Favorite Fabrics, was released in November 2008. As I continue to teach, quilt and write I am also working on fabric constructions and framed fabric artwork. Many years of working on quilts and garments inform these constructions. I am beginning to show my work in gallery settings and have been fortunate to be involved in two shows this year!
